Would you go to a pro basketball game if no one was keeping score? Then why do we do it in trucking?

You can instantly tell if people on the court are keeping score–especially if money is involved. The players’ intensity and effort are just on a different level. It is no different in trucking.

Trucking is a team sport and the entire team has to know if they are winning or losing to achieve top performance. Getting your players’ heads in the game means they have to know the team score however leadership chooses to measure it, whether it is profitability, revenue, or miles per driver per week.

Even more important, every player on your trucking team needs to know their individual performance and how they compare to their peers. Winners want to win and they crave the recognition and rewards of being at the top. Even the disengaged will try harder so they do not have to face the embarrassment or discipline of being at the bottom.

Here are some ideas for keeping individual scores for some different roles:

Sales: How much new customer business have you brought in lately?

Customer Service: Customer satisfaction scores, productivity, appointment accuracy

Planning: Preplan before empty, deadhead, drivers sitting after empty, driver commitment keeping

Driver Managers: Driver productivity, driver retention, communication performance, driver commitment keeping

Drivers: Miles or revenue per week, miles per gallon

Shop Managers: Cost per mile, equipment downtime, repeat repairs

Recruiting: Drivers recruited, driver retention, driver commitment keeping

These are just a few ideas. What are your favorite ways to keep score in trucking?
